Volumio Pi 4 - Persistent Icecast Streaming Guide Documenting the working configuration created during troubleshooting.
Objective: Replace Volumio's native MPD HTTP stream on port 8000 with an Icecast mount point that survives track and station changes more gracefully.
Result achieved:- Native stream: http://PI-IP:8000- Icecast stream: http://PI-IP:9000/volumio.ogg- VLC successfully continues after station/song changes with a short pause.
Flow Diagram Internet Radio / Local Library | v MPD (Volumio) | shout output v Icecast2 :9000 | v /volumio.ogg mount | +--> VLC +--> Browser +--> External listeners
Installation sudo apt update sudo apt install icecast2 Configure Icecast volumio admin 9000 Volumio
Template Modification Edit the template, NOT /etc/mpd.conf sudo nano /volumio/app/plugins/music_service/mpd/mpd.conf.tmpl audio_output { type "shout" name "Icecast Stream" host "127.0.0.1" port "9000" protocol "icecast2" mount "/volumio.ogg" password "volumio" encoder "vorbis" bitrate "320" format "44100:16:2" }
Restart Services sudo systemctl restart icecast2 sudo systemctl restart volumio
Verification Open: http://PI-IP:9000/status.xsl
Expected: sources = 1 Mount point: /volumio.ogg Playback URL: http://PI-IP:9000/volumio.ogg
Rollback sudo cp /volumio/app/plugins/music_service/mpd/mpd.conf.tmpl.bak /volumio/app/plugins/music_service/mpd/mpd.conf.tmpl
sudo apt purge icecast2 sudo autoremove
Lessons Learned Editing /etc/mpd.conf is temporary because Volumio regenerates it from mpd.conf.tmpl. The shout output must be added to the template.
FFmpeg relay testing was abandoned in favour of MPD -> Icecast integration, which produced the desired VLC behaviour
